Sophomore Juniper Ake, 16, has become the most powerful figure at Ridgeline Union High School, sources confirmed Tuesday, after replacing her smartphone with a $40 flip phone and becoming the only person in the building who cannot be reached.

“She said, ‘See you when I see you,’ and then she walked away,” said classmate Deja Rowe, 15. “No location sharing. No read receipts. No typing bubble. You just have to trust. I think about it constantly.”

Faculty describe an unsettling presence. Ms. Ake makes sustained eye contact, retains information delivered to her verbally, and during lulls in conversation simply sits there, being wherever she is. “She asked me how my weekend was and then listened to the answer,” said her history teacher, Paul Grieves. “I wasn’t ready. Nobody had done that to me in years.”

Her influence now organizes the school’s social calendar. Parties are planned around her availability, which no one knows. Rumors reach her last, and by the time they arrive they have been fact-checked by three separate people hoping to impress her. A wave of imitators bought flip phones in May; most lasted one weekend, returning Monday citing logistics.

“Attention is the only scarce resource these kids have left, and the platforms strip-mine it by design,” said Dr. Imogen Reasoner, who studies adolescent status at Kestrel College. “Juniper has cornered the market with the oldest move there is: not being available. Six trillion dollars of engagement infrastructure, and it has no countermeasure for a girl who flips her phone shut.”

The administration has declined to intervene, partly out of respect and partly because Ms. Ake is the only student whose phone has never once gone off during a test, a statistic the vice principal reads aloud at assemblies in a tone teachers describe as wistful.

The school’s group chats now devote significant bandwidth to discussing Ms. Ake, speculation she has never seen and, classmates concede, never will.

Ms. Ake could not be reached for comment. Classmates say that is, in fact, the whole thing.
